A SHORT DESCRIPTION OF CONTEMPORARY BOTSWANA

BOTSWANA

Botswana is a small country located in the southern portion of Africa. Although it has a population of about two million people, it is one of the most sparsely populated countries in the world because seventy percent of the nation consists of the Kalahari Desert.
The nation has been an independent democracy since 1966. It has been relatively free of political turmoil and democratic ideals have become strongly rooted throughout the populace and its institutions.
The economy of Botswana is one of the strongest within the entire continent. A consensus ranks it among the top five in Africa. This is remarkable because at one time in recent decades it was one of the poorest nations on earth.
The crime rate in Botswana is relatively low. The greatest threat to American tourists has historically been minor offenses such as petty theft
Although Botswana is primarily flat, it has a natural beauty which is accented by large numbers of elephants, wildebeests and antelopes. A major attraction is the Chobe National Park that contains a large variety of indigenous animals as well as several hundred species of birds.
Tourism is encouraged by the beautiful and exotic natural attractions of Botswana which are unavailable in most other countries of the world. Plenty of hunting safaris as well as photography excursions are among the most popular reasons which attract tourists.
